Mitchell/Booher - TN, VA, MD
Seeking information on Miriam Mitchell, Native American, married to Herman Booher - they had a child - Henry Mitchell Booher. Here is the info my cousin Terry sent me:
1. HERMAN2 BOOHER (BOOHER1) was born Abt. 1865 in Virginia or Sullivan Co., Tn.. He married MIRIAM MITCHELL. She was born in Virginia.
Notes for MIRIAM MITCHELL:
Married in Sullivan Co., Tennessee, Marriage license is filed there. Husband, Herman was born there, listed under birth records. Miriam 's maiden name believe to be Mitchell. She was full blooded Cherokee Native American. She was alive around 1926 -possible 1930. My father, Carroll Bennett Booher/Booker remembers her living with his parents in Maryland on the tobacco farm that he was born on. Remembered many wild plants that were edible are herbal that he was taught as a child from her and his parents using. She was stern in personality according to my Father. She always had the children doing chores, dislike play. He had to gather wood, plants such as acorns, wild onion, Queen Anne's Lace (wild carrot), dandelions, poke weed, skunk cabbage, berries, cattails, horehound, walnuts. Helped with snapping beans, shelling peas, shucking corn, picking "tobacco worms" (caterpillars of a destructive moth) that has stingers on it few spiked hairs. She used willow switches to swat them for laziness or misbehavior. She always worked from sunrise to sunset. Assumed she died sometime before my father's parents died when he was about 5 and 6 years of age. This is assumed because my father and his brother John, who was 6 yrs. older(age 12) were sent to live at an orphans farm after the parents died. My father lived there until his only sister was old enough and able to support him living with her. The farm is was sold or rented, not known. Do know I was driven to see the farm house which was still standing and a working farm about 1972, my father took me for a drive and pointed it out. The house was up a slight hill from the country road we drove on, in a farm and wooded area. Not by a city. We drove from Hillcrest Heights, Md. (now Temple Hills, Md.) about an hour drive to reach The said hi had was born on the farm and his grandmother lived there with him. Do not know if grandfather lived there as well or had past way.
Child of HERMAN BOOHER and MIRIAM MITCHELL is:
2. i. HENRY MITCHELL3 BOOHER, b. July 07, 1885, Sullivan Co., Tennesse/ OR Virginia; d. Bef. January 08, 1929, Md..
Generation No. 2
2. HENRY MITCHELL3 BOOHER (HERMAN2, BOOHER1) was born July 07, 1885 in Sullivan Co., Tennesse/ OR Virginia, and died Bef. January 08, 1929 in Md.. He married RUTH LARREL LOVETT September 04, 1902 in Sullivan Co., Tn., daughter of JOHN LOVETT and UNKNOWN. She was born September 1885 in Md., and died January 08, 1929 in Anne Arrundel, Md..

Records: Sullivan County, Tn. has a birth and marriage record for H. Mitchell Booher.
There should be a death record for him in Ann Arundel Co., Md. and perhaps listed in the Baltimore Newspapers as well. He died while inspection a building he was working on, on a Sunday. He never worked on Sunday, but this one time he went out to check on the process. He had an elevator accident when it broke and knocked him to the basement the site. He worked in construction during slow farming seasons. They raised tobacco and their own livestock in Greenock, Anne Arundel Co. Md. They also lived in Prince Georges County prior to this, as one son John was born there, and 6 yrs. later, my father was born in Greennock. Family was said to be from Maryland, Virginia, and mostly Sullivan Co., Tn. My father said he had many family members from there. He said to look up the Booher family Cemetery by the Booher Mountain, and that is their family. Their is such a cemetery, but so far I can not find the connection to link them together. Henry was From an Irish, German who had married a full blooded Cherokee woman. We know that many family members used to go to their farm to get together.
