Hi Nancy,
I don't know much about blood types as being indicators of Indian lines, but I do know that Mitchell is a HUGE Indian name in New England. My own 4th grt. grandmother was either born a Mitchell or a Thomas (another huge Indian name among the Passamaquoddy which is usually seen spelled Tomah or Tomer or Toma).I have not been able to determine what her real maiden name was, which is also typical for Indians trying to "hide" among the whites during volatile times for them.
I do know my Indian lineage is Passamaquoddy from Maine / Canada, but not sure yet where it ends up.
But if your Mitchell's were VT and NH those two states were Huge Abenaki Indian areas and others as well lived there, but the Abenaki tribal headquarters is in VT.
The Abenaki's are among the great nation of Wabenaki's which includes the Penobscot, Passamaquoddy, Micmac, Maliseet and Abenaki nations of people.
Its fun to try and find the Indian in your family and I wish you lots of good hunting there. Its difficult but rewarding when you do find something.
My 3rd grt. grandfather was given the last name of Moody which is Not at all Indian, but he was an Indian doctor in Lowell, MA for many years.Through the great help of others, a nice man emailed me that told me he found my 3rd grt. grandfather in the Lowell city directories listed as an Indian doctor.
In 1870 I found him in the Lowell census where he was listed as a Physician and race Indian born Canada, but he claimed Maine as his birth place other times too.
So discount nothing when searching for your Indian family, they had to change their named from first to last and even took on childrens names, they never told their correct age or where they were born most times and they moved a lot.
Many of them worked in lumber yards, or labor type jobs.My family were mill workers, lumber jacks and fishermen among other things.
So I hope you will pursue your Indian history...and just remember as I was once told, even though you may only have a drop of Indian blood inside you, Somewhere in your family there IS a full blood Indian.Even if its a wife whose half Indian, one of her parents are full...so don't let anything discourage you from your search.
"May your mocassins carry you across safe paths".
