I just wanted to follow up and inform you that I read a posting just recently that indicated that some of the Mitchell's in the northwest part of South Carolina settled in Northern Louisiana, where my Mitchell family settled in the early 1850s.
Therefore, there may be a connection between the VA Mitchell's (who could have migrated southward), the South Carolina Mitchell's and those in Northern Louisiana. No proof, yet, however, except that the will of the widow of Thomas Mitchell, who died in Northern Louisiana, indicates he was granted 80 acres of land in Claiborne Parish, LA for his service in the War of 1812 for the South Carolina Militia.
In checking the internet for veterans of the War of 1812 for South Carolina, there are several Mitchell's mentioned including Thomas (above).
Thomas had one son named Mabrary. His widow was Phebe. My GGGrandfather, James H. Mitchell, posted a bond for Mabrary at the probate of his mother's estate. What the connection between them was is unknown.
Another Mitchell that died and is buried in Homer, LA (Claiborne Parish) was an attorney. He died in the 1850s and had heirs in Arkansas, Alabama. He was born in Maine.
At his death he had no heirs living in Louisiana.
My point in posting this information is that Virginia was a major point from which many of my ancestors migrated west or south.
Perhaps some of the Bedford County, VA Mitchell's went south to South Carolina, Louisiana, etc., while others went west to Tennessee, Kentucky, Missouri.I have a feeling they all tie together in some way and that maybe James H. Mitchell, a minister in Bedford County, VA in the late 1700s was the ancestor of them all.
