Miranda family - Naples to SPaulo,Brazil
Hello, my name is João Paulo Miranda, i'm 25, brazilian, lawyer. As far as I know, my great-granfather, Andre Miranda, came from TORRE ANNUNZIATA, near Naples, to São Paulo, in the beginning of the 20th century (about 1905). Here, he married Rosa Marrocco, from Abbruzzi, in 1909. They had three children: Maria, Luiza and Salvador (my gd. parent).
Regarding to the origin of the surname Miranda, it's supposed to be an Iberian surname, very common in the north of Portugal and in the north of Spain (mostly Galizia and Navarra).
The surname was also adopted by many jewish families, especially in Portugal, when the pursuit against them started, in 1498. This is the reason that many portuguese/new-christians are named MIRANDA. Many of them settled in England, Netherlands, USA and Brazil, in the 16th and 17th century.
There are also many branches of the Mirandas in Italy, especially in Sicily and Campania (Naples). When Mirandas came to Italy? I don't know. Perhaps they might always have been living there, because, it's not only an Iberian surname, or an Italian surname, it's LATIN (italian, portuguese, spanish, or even jewish??? - who knows?)
In any case, I would like to keep contact with anyone else interested on the genealogy of the Mirandas.
Thanks,
João Paulo Miranda, São Paulo, Brazil.
