Hi Sandy:(I tried to send this direct to your E-mail address - it came back as >... Host unknown (Name server: netusal.net: host not found)
Thank you for your response.
I am researching the Mintz name in Canada. My mom and I have come back in time from her father to her ancestor Isaac Mintz. This is where we have hit a brick wall. All of the information we have about him is from the Ontario Census. Each one tells us that he was born in the U.S. and that he was of German Origin. We have an approximate date of birth as February 1794 based on his age on the 1871 census. He was 76. We are trying to locate his birth record and his death record. (We have a little family joke that he was an alien, because he appears in a marriage register on July 19 1821 when he married Lavinia Collier in Adolphustown, Upper Canada and disappears with the 1871 Census.) We haven't been able to find his death record even though a fine was levied for not filing a death. We may not be looking in the right place or the record doesn't exist - ??fire, flood, destruction. He is shown on cemetery records for Moscow Cemetery, where his wife is buried, but my mom couldn't find the headstone (could have been destroyed) or there may not have been one. Mom has family stories that say that he was Pennsylvania Deutsche and that he was from Pottstown, PA or Potsdam, NY. I have found that Pottstown was incorporated in 1815, and was known as Pottsgrove before that date. I need to know where I would look for birth records for 1793 through 1796 in Pennsylvania. I am presuming that I would have to look for church records?!! Our difficulty is gaining access to records in the U.S. for no cost or minimal cost. My mom would be willing to pay for research if we could pinpoint where to look so that we could be reasonably sure of some success.
I have come to the conclusion that I have to go out in another direction and try to come forward from the 1750's in Pennsylvania or New York and hope that I just happen to luck out.
Bob Hudson on the Rootsweb Hessian site suggested that I research Johan Michael Mintz who naturalized at Philadelphia, PA in 1749.
His name shows up on the FTM census index for PAwith the following information: Mintz, Johan Michael,State : PA, County : Philadelphia Co., Location : Philadelphia,Year : 1749
Thank you for your response.

If Johan Michael Mintz is an ancestor of Isaac, we figure he would be his grandfather or great-grandfather.
I don't know where to begin. If we could find a census listing for 1800 for a Mintz with a child under ten we could search forward for them. In 1810 Isaac would have been about 16 and probably away from home. I have found that census records aren't very much help before 1851 for Ontario because they only record head of household and numbers of children over or under a certain age.
In your posting to GenForum you said: "Our line of Mintz' are from the Hessian soldiers that came to America to fight in the Revolutionary War. We have been told that there were 3 brothers that came here during that time, 2 stayed here and 1 supposedly went back, that I have no proof of, but as we have heard. One of the brothers stayed in the Pennsylvania area and the other went south into the Carolinas."
Do you know the name of the brother that stayed in PA? Do you have any information on the ancestors of these Hessian soldiers?
This was listed on the Rootsweb Hessian site as a reply to a question asked.
"The only MINTZ entry in the HETRINA volumes is in Vol.I
for MINTZ, no first name given, born 1740/41 at Rotenburg
new postalcode 36199 Rotenburg a.d.Fulda, he served with
the Hesse-Kassel Grenadier Battalion von Linsingen, 4.Comp.
as a Grenadier (Private). He was on the Muster Roll Feb.1776
no other dates available. no discharge date or what
happened to him."
I have the information on the NC Mintz' from Erin Bible's Website : www.u.arizona.edu/~elb/Hewett/hewett.htmErin Bibles has a Wilhelm Otto Mentz in NC. She also mentions that Wilhelm might have been a Hessian and that he had two brothers that came with him to Pennsylvania. She doesn't have any further information on the brothers. She would keep in touch with me when she came across any information.
Thank you again for your response.
I have been rambling on and don't know if I have given you any useful information.
