Hi-
Since you're asking for the exact location, I suspect I really can't help you much, but here goes:
Volume 50 of the National Genealogical Society Quarterly "Slave Owners Within the First Assessment District of Burke County, Georgia in 1798" lists John Milton as residing at "Padanaram near Waynesboro."This was the longest descriptive entry in the tax list.
In the article on John Milton in "Georgia's Landmarks, Memorials and Legends," it states that he
"died on his plantation near Louisville, Ga."
Many of the shorter obits say he died "in Waynesboro" as I'm sure you know.Perhaps this means that Padan Aram was between Louisville and Waynesboro.
I suspect we'll only find Padan Aram by tracking down neighbors in deed records.I began working on this because there were people in my family who believed that our ancestor William Hamilton Milton was a son of John Milton of Padan Aram. After a lot of research, I found that was extremely unlikely (even considering the possbility of illegitimacy) and abandoned my research on this family.I have a lot of notes, and some info on the Farr connection that hasn't made it into family books.I'd be glad to share, though it will take me some time to come up to speed.I have charts of Hannah Spencer Milton's neighbors and some of their land holdings in 1820.(Although many of the brief bios of John Milton say he died in 1804, he apparently really died in 1817.) In 1804, John Milton was in Captain Sandford's tax district in Burke Co.
I have some indexes for the Augusta Chronicle that might help.
It seems to me that he left the Augusta area in about 1794.Jefferson Co. was made from Burke in 1796, and he had holdings in both counties. His son Homer appears to have taken over the Jefferson county lands. In May of 1809, a Dennis Nobles sold land adjacent to John Milton in Burke county.
I spoke with the secretary of the GA Society of the Cincinnati a couple of years back, and he said that they had never been able to determine exactly where John Milton was buried. Some bios say he died at "Milton Plantation" near Louisville - don't know if that's just the usual sloppiness or if he died at Homer's place.John's son Fabius Maximus Milton is supposed to have died at Padan Aram in 1813, and Julius Ceasar Milton was born and died there in 1801.Perhaps newspaper articles about their deaths might mention where Padan Aram is.I also have a bit of info on the name Padan Aram.
Regards,
Dorinda Whitley
