My Mills came from Co. Mayo, Ireland and they were Catholic as well. Mills is a relatively common name in northern Mayo MacLysaght's "The Surnames of Ireland" indicates that while Mills is generally an English name that is common in Ulster, it may be an agnomen, an Mhuilinn (of the mill)elsewhere in Ireland. An agnomen is a sort of nickname used to distinguish a group within a family. So it may have been Burke of the Mill to distinguish from the other Burkes.I have no idea what family these agnomenic Mills are connected to, or even whether they are connected to any family in particular. I looked around to see whether there was any other information on this group of Mill, but with no success thus far.P.S., my Mills was Anthony Mills of Derreens, near Belmullet, Co. Mayo.
