I have a cop of the 1860 Onslow Co. Census on the Millis family and he isn't mentioned. This is the only ones listed.

dwelling #44
family #45
Millis, Benjamin 45
" , David 19
" , Eliz. 12
" , Mary J. 9
" , Lucretia 4
" , Rebecca 3
" , Benjamin 1

dwelling # 1055
Millis, Lemuel 35
" , Prudy 30
" ,Catherine 6
" , Sidney 4
" , Sallie 2
" , Eliza 8/12

I am trying to find the parents of Isaac Thomas Millis who was married to Penny Louisa Leary. They had a son Richard Barry Millis who was born in 1907 and died in 1980. He lived in Pender and New Hanover Countys.
Your John Cary Millis would have been about 42 at the time of this census maybe he was in Pender or New Hanover. Natalie
PS this isn't my family, just a friend of mine. Searching for her.
