Sandy Ealy's message is essentially correct except some details differ from research done by Donna Brewer Jackson of Manila, Arkansas towards a Masters Degree in History at Arknasas State University in Jonesboro and also my own family oral history. Lucilius S. Milligan, my Grandfather, left Illinois in 1896 one step ahead of the law looking for a place to hide out. He was running from the law supposedly for stealing some horses. He found his hiding place on a hight knoll in the swamps Southwest of Manila, Arkansas. This place was homesteaded by Lucilius and eventually was named Milligan Ridge. Lucilius was accompanied to Arkansas by his two sons, James Riley " Uncle Rile" Milligan and Jacob Minton " Mint" Milligan. Uncle Rile Homesteaded 160 Acres in 1897 at Milligan Ridge West of where his father settled. Mint married a women named Rosettaor Zet and settled 12 miles North of Milligan Ridge tofarm. He got into an altercation with three other men over the ownership of some hogs. This precipitated a gun fight in which Mint was shot and killed.Zet subsequently did shoot and kill one of Mint's assailents and was never arrested for it because of this man's bragging and threats against her. Lucilius Milligan's deed records for the land he homesteded in Milligan Ridge can be found in Deed Record Book 26:337, Osceola District. Osceola, Arkansas.Lucilius Milligan died from a stroke in Manila in 1918. His second wife had died the year before from Cancer. Lucilius left four small children as orphans: Mazie, Georgia, Clyde, and opal.Clyde was my Father. He died at Little Rock Arknasas in 1970
