Name: Tom Milligan E-Mail: milligan_tom@yahoo.com Subject: Re:John Milligan and Sarah Robinson: You're All Wrong Added on Date: 9/19/07 Message Number: 1827 Body of Message: It has been so trying for me as a descendant of the John Milligan 1st Family from Down County, Ireland in 1771 to New Castle, Pa. and fighter "a shirtman" from Berkeley County, Va. in the Rev. War. His Wife's Name was Sarah Robinson and always was all of his life long. He and Sarah parented all of John Milligan's 10 children. One of which, the 9th born, a son also named John Milligan 2nd moved to the Arkansas territory around 1818 and settled in the Strawberry Settlement of Lawrence County, Arkansas. He was the Rev. John Milligan. The Doak Family would have you believe that John the 1st was married to Isabella Doak. Daughter of a samual Doak. This is not true. Some years ago, 2 women from my own family, Eunice Bonham Baker and Odessa Bonham McGowan, wrote a book entitled, "Our Milligan Heritage". In it they stated that John Milligan married Isabella Doak and that they parented 9 of John's 10 children. George Milligan, John's last born was suppose to have been birthed by Sarah Robinson, Supposidly John Milligan's second wife. Their Eveidence for this story was a marriage certificate they found in Augusta County, Virginia between John Milli HEN and Isabella Doak. Not John Milli GAN. Yes, I will grant you that there were 2 john Milligan's in Virginia during the same time period but the truth is that John MilliHEN and Isabella Doak are buried in Tennessee and The John Milli GAN and Sarah Robinson are buried side by side in the Stone Church Cemetery in Ohio County, W. Virginia. I can send you all the Photos of these graves. John Milligan applied for and recieved a pension from the Sec. of War for his Rev. War enlistments. It is a very well known document and allot of historical evidence of the Milligan family is based on it. But this was also taken at face value by the Baker and Bonham book and the authors failed to research any further. If they had done more research they would have found that Sarah Robinson, John's Wife also filed for the same pension after John's death 1838. The document for her application where she states that "I was married to John for all of our lives" can be found in the National Archives and in Augusta County, Virginia filed by her and John's son Hugh Milligan, who John named in his will as the executor of his estate. Sorry to burst everyone's bubble with this but all of us descendants of John Milligan 1st and his children, including the John Milligan 2nd branch, as well as the Doak Family are going to have to get used to the idea that OUR John Milligan 1st was never affiliated with the Doak Family. All of John's children were birthed by Sarah (Robinson) Milligan. The Eunice Baker and Odessa McGowan Book is very inaccurate in their telling of the Milligan story of John Milligan 2nd of Triadelphia, W. Virginia. There is also allot of other information in their book that is not correct but each family branch will have to figure it out for themselves as we are now living a full generation, maybe two, from the time they wrote the book. With that said, I must also say that there is allot of information in their book that is accurate. Like the Pictures and other documents they included are very concise. If you care to go to the Yahoo Groups and type in the Group "Milligan", you will find actual and accurate knowledge of the John Milligan Family. Also you can find a very accurate and very full Milligan Family Tree at a website named "Jane's Names". I know that the owners of this site and Essie Milligan have put years of research into the Milligan Family. Their records can be used in a court of law to distinguish the accurate Milligan Family History. Currently, I am considering a court injuction to have ALL of the Doak Family Pages and their trees removed from the internet until they are corrected and Our John Milligan's name and his children are removed from their various websites. As we all say in Genealogy, this is a Genealogy "in progress". New details may pop up when you least expect them to. Such is the case here with the Milligan Family. Anyone of you can write to me at my posted E-mail address. Most Respectfully yours, Thomas L. Milligan Notify Administrator about this message?
