James Miller SC>GA>TX>IT
I'm trying to unravel a mystery in my Miller branch. Here's what I have so far, in reverse chron since it's pretty convoluted.
In 1937, James D. Miller, blacksmith, states in interview that his father was J. L. Miller and his mother was Anna Kirkpatrick. He came to Indian Territory from Texas in 1888 with his wife. He and his brother had the first livrey stable in Wynnewood. He runs a blacksmith shop in Pauls Valley.
In a separate interview in 1937, Ed Miller, who has a blacksmith shop in Pauls Valley, presumably James D's brother as listed in 1920 census, states that his father was Bill People who died when he was 2 years old (~1875 based on his age in census) and that he came to Indian Territory with his mother and stepfather (unnamed) in 1886.

1880 Cass County Texas Census - Cynthia A Miller, widow (36) living with sons James D (14) Edward E (7) and daughters Ida O (12) and S..... (unclear - may be Suzzie) (5).All born Georgia except Edward and Suzzie, Texas. Father shown as born in South Carolina. (Record mis-indexed under "Willis" -- the handwriting made it a judgement call.)
1860 Calhoun County Georgia Census - James L Miller (Blacksmith) (44) born South Carolina, wife Ann (17) born Georgia. Married within the year. Living near Kirkpatrick family who had a daughter named Cynthia Ann in other records.
Cynthia Ann Kirkpatrick may be the Anna Kirkpatrick that James D names as his mother, but the ages are off by as much as 3 years in school records. All the census records, except 1860 in Georgia, name her as Cynthia. I have no definite proof to attach that record to J. L. Miller, other than James D's statement about Anna Kirkpatrick.
If I assume that Edward's stepfather was named "Knight" (1910 Census record) I can find no "Knight" family that matches in Indian Territory.
I can find no last name for James D's wife Kate, and would love to know that.
I can't sort out the Bill People reference from Edward, or why he would carry the name Miller if James L. died before he was even born.
I can't find any matching reference to J. L. Miller other than the possible link in the 1860 census.
Do any of these folks look familiar to you?
