I am trying to locate the parents of my George MILLER, b. Abt. 1768.
His origins are cloudy at best, as I suspect many MILLER's are;)
His Obituary states that he came to North Carolina early in life from Maryland. His daughter stated that he was born in Pennsylvania in the 1880 census, his son says Germany in the same year. Given the common first and last names, it has been difficult to trace.
I am hoping that someone is researching a MILLER line that migrated from Maryland to North Carolina and that maybe we can make a connection.
Let me know if you see any links:)
Here are some of the specifics;
"George MILLER, of German descent, was born in 1767. He was in Rowan County, North Carolina in the 1780's and possibly before. He lived in Salisbury and owned land there. Other MILLER kin had preceded him in Rowan County. He married Peggy "Margaret" BRANDON in 1795. She was the daughter of Matthew BRANDON and Jane ARMSTRONG. The BRANDON's were a prominent, public spirited English family, who came to North Carolina via Virginia. The ARMSTRONGS were Scotch. The Children of George and Peggy MILLER, were; Matthew Franklin, Gustavus Adolphus, Eliza and Jane. "

George Miller Will
Filed with Superior Court, Rowan County, North Carolina, January, 2, 1834, Will Book H, Page 644
In the name of God, amen, I George Miller of the County of Rowan and State of North Carolina, being of sound mind and disposing memory, but feeble in body and knowing the uncertainty of life, do make, ordain and publish this my last will and testament.
Imprimis it is my anxious wish that the situation of my wife Ann Miller should be comfortable and easy and believing that in consequence of her age and feelings she is not able to manage the plantation Negroes & other affairs that she would necessarily have to attend to in a proper manner, I have therefore, after mature reflection thought best to adopt the following expedient as the only one that would give her satisfaction and render her situation comfortable of opportunity.
[I designate] my son-in-law, Lemuel Bingham, her trustee as he has much of her confidence.
I therefore give to Lemuel Bingham, in trust, the following property during her lifetime, and no longer, for her support and without any trouble to her and for the use and benefit of said Bingham and family with whom my wife Ann Miller is to live, also my daughter Eliza while she remains single, without any cost or charge, to wit, the whole of the plantation on which I now reside, including the land purchase from A.G. Carter, in all about two hundred and fifty acres, also all my household & kitchen furniture, subject to such legacies as may be hereafter made and excepted. Also all of my stock of my provisions on hand. Also my negro woman Rebecca, Milly, Chloe and her child, and my negro boys Moses and Henry.
It is further my wish that Manuel, Louisa, & Rachel and there (sic) families, with the exception Isham, now in possession of my son, Matthew F. Miller, be hired out to the best advantage by the trustee Lemuel Bingham and the proceeds of the hire applied, to the purposes above mentioned, by the trustee.
I further give to Lemuel Bingham trustee, for the purpose afore said, three horses-ponys; Charley, Fox & Betsey Baker, four cows and three smaller cattle to be selected by the trustee from my stock; all the hogs & sheep that belonging to the farm; all the corn, the wheat, hay, fodder & other provincles; also my wagon and gun, and the ploughs and gears; and all other farming tools, implements on the plantation that the said trustee may think necessary to perform the duties of his trade.
And it is further my will that Lemuel Bingham, the trustee, shall manage all & every portion of the property conveyed above in a way that he may think best calculated to advance the subject of the trust, and be subject to the contract or hindrance of no other persons. But should the trustee herein appointed think proper at any time hereafter to remove from the county and surrender the trust, then and in that case, it is my wish that my son Matthew F. Miller succeed him as trustee, with all the duties, rights & privileges attached to the trust, and that Lemuel Bingham, the old trustee, conveys & delivers to the said M.F. Miller, all and every portion of the property to him in trust, or to make the trust property in as good a situation as when the said Bingham received the same.
It is further my will if my wife, Ann Miller, should at any time become discontented and abandon the protection and support of the trustee and leave the plantation and his family, that there, and in that case, she forfeit all the rights and privileges to which she may be entitled to under this my will.
Item: I give my son Matthew F. Miller, in addition to which what I have already done for him, the plantation on which he now lives, purchased from Peter S. Parke, supposed to contain one hundred and twenty four acres more or less, to him, his heirs and assigns forever. Also the use of the negro boy, Isham, now in his possession until the death of my wife. I also give to him such of my wearing apparel as she may think proper to wear. And the balance of my clothes, it is my wish that my boy Isaac should have.
Item: I give to my son-in-law, Lemuel Bingham, in addition to what I have given him heretofore, my valuable negro boy Isaac, to him, his heirs and assigns forever.
Item: I give to my daughter Eliza, in addition to what I have already done for her, my boy Tom, a tailor by trade, and now living with Benjamin Fraley in Salisbury, to her heirs and assigns forever; also my silver soup ladle and my ivory handle knives and forks.
Item: I give my son, Gustavus Adolphus Miller, the plantation on which I now live after the death of my wife Ann Miller, to him, his heirs and assigns forever; also a note I hold on him for four hundred dollars; also my silver watch, a set of silver table spoons, one new feather bed now in my house; also a bedstead and furniture.
Item: the remainder of my property not herein devised to will, my horses, Macy, Jack, Snap & Rotruck, the balance of the cattle, my cart and still, and such articles as the trustee may think proper & advisable to sell, I wish to be disposed of at public sale and the proceeds of said sale and the money remaining on hand at my death, after defraying my funeral expenses and paying my just debts, I wish to be appropriated and applied by my executors to the defiance [defense] of my title to the negroes which come to me by my wife Ann Miller, to wit: Will, Rebecca, Chloe, Moses, Manuel, Henry, Louise, Pleasant, Milly, Mariah, Hariet, Rachel, Isam, Bill, Horice, & Laura, and after defraying said expenses, if there should be any money on hand, I wish it equally devided between my heirs.
Item: if my claim to said ???? negroes should be established, it is my will that they should be equally devided among my heirs and [if] they cannot agree as to the devission, I wish the negroes to be sold and the money arising from the sale to be equally devided amongst my heirs. But should my claim to them be established before the death of my wife Ann Miller, then and in that case, they are not to be devided or sold until after her death, but to remain in the hands of the trustee for the purpose above mentioned.
Item: On the death of my wife, it is my wish that all of my household and kitchen furniture be sold and the and the proceeds be equally devided amongst my heirs.
Lastly, I appoint my friend, Archibald G. Carter, Lemuel Bingham & Matthew F. Miller, Executors of this my last will and testament and enjoin on them never to surrender the negroes that come to me by my wife Ann Miller, to any person except as herein devised, until the title that belongs, legally established, to be in another person.
Given under my hand and seal, this Second day of January, 1834

[Note: Archibald Grayson Carter (1801-1887) graduated from the University of North Carolina with an A.B. in 1820. He practiced law in Rowan County, North Carolina, and served as the county's senator in the North Carolina General Assembly for 1832-1833.
Obituary for Archibald Carter: Davie Times, 24 Mar 1882
Died in this place after a brief illness, Mr. A.G. Carter, on Sunday morning the 19th of March 1882, at 2:20 a.m. in his 81st year. Mr. Carter was born in Caswell County, March 29, 1801; graduated at the University of North Carolina in 1820, in the class with Judge Battle, Honorable Bat. Moore and other distinguished North Carolinians, and was, at the time of his death, the only surviving member of that class. He moved to this county, then a part of Rowan, and commenced the practice of law, shortly after he married a Miss Wilson and reared a large family. He served as Chairman of the County Court of Davie for nearly thirty years. In his younger days he was among the most energetic and enterpising men of the county. He was a fine businessman and devoted his time to the affairs and saved much money by his judicious management. No man was truer to the conviction of right, and earnestly devoted to whatever effected the welfare of the county. Thus another of the old landmarks have passed away. ]
Daughter Elizabeth give the birthplace of her father as Pennsylvania in the 1880 census.
Son Gustavus Adolphus gives birthplace of father as Germany, and mother as England in the 1880 census.
