Searching for descendants of John and Polly Miller...to assist with the historical recognition and preservation of the Mount Paran Campground Cemetery at New Market, Alabama.. on Graveyard Hill... The Cemetery has been added to the Al Historical Register (1989)
John Miller was a brother to Thomas Miller (wife Anna) who settled at Hillsboro, Al...(The Miller Cemetery on North Al line in Madison Cty)... Thomas sold the lots for the town of Hillsboro... and gave the property for the Miller Cemetery..Their other bro. was Garland B Miller who signed a Petition to rid Madison County of Indians/renagades in 1817..petition to REturn J Meigs..the Cherokee Agent.
John Miller and his wife were among the earliest residents of New Market (est. 1806)...they came form Madison Cty KY and entered land along Winchester Rd... they built a grist mill in 1819...and had a beautiful two story antebellum home...along the waters of Mountain Fork Creek..
The Miller Family Bible is copyrighted 1725 in NY and has been published in the VAlley Leaves..by the TVGS of the Huntsville Library... Bible records include the names of many of the slaves and their descendants...
The other brother Joseph Miller was involved in the est of the Cumberland Prebysterian Church at Cowan.. TN..
Anyone interested in the preservation of this historic Miller Family plot...(located within the six acres of the Campground/Cemetery) are urged to visit the Mount Paran Cemtery... and HELP!!! The old markers for the Miller family are cracked, and many have slid off the base...I organized a non-profit Corp. in 1987 to "recognize,preserve and maintain this historic site)...along with many other family members...Samuel DAvis, a Rev. War Veteran gave the six acres for the cemetery in 1842...more than 400 gravesites are there...including one of the largest intact -remaining "slave cemeteries"...please contact [email protected]...
Clean up of brush, etc is currently underway by members of the community,etc.. each weekend...Our organization needs interested family members to participate and once and for all..let's maintain--this historic old cemetery and Cumberland Prebysterian Campgroud....A memorial service is being planned to rededicate the site and recognize the families buried there..including Rev. War VEts, and more than 20 Confederate Soldiers...
