On 8/8 1938 in Fairfield, Oklahoma, the National Council of Cherokees elected Jesse Bartley Milam as their Chief. On 4/16/1941, US Pres. F.D. Roosevelt confirmed Milam's appointment as Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation. President H. Truman reconfirmed his appointment in 1942,43,and 47. Milam served as chief until his death in 1949. He is considered one of the Cherokees' most important chiefs. He was also an oilman and president of the Bank of Chelsea, the first bank in the Cherokee nation.
He was born in Italy, Texas in 1884 to William Guinn Milam and Sarah Ellen Couch. William is a descendant of John Milam (of Halifax) Virginia. (See www.milam.com for more info on his line).
