Jerry,
I've been researching at the library and cannot determine (as of yet) where Thomas was prior to Virginia. Spelling of the name can vary a lot. I believe he had brothers Francis and Charles who were living in Rowan (later Surry Co) North Carolina and on those records the name is spelled "Madcalf." The record keepers in that area apparently could not spell very well. They also spelled "sincerely" as "cinsearly" so that gives you and idea of the literacy level of the official at the time.
On the 1786 state census Isaiah Midkiff and younger Thomas, believed to be his brother, are living in Surry Co, NC and names are also spelled "Madcalf." The younger Thomas was living in Henry Co, VA and sold his land in 1784 and moved to Surry Co, NC and later moved to Hawkins (later Grainger Co), Tennessee. Both Isaiah and Thomas made this move.
Isaiah fought in the Revolution under Abraham Shelton out of VA and later Joseph Cloud (who lived in Surry Co, NC). Thomas was in the 9th Regiment of the Virginia Line and fought with all the Isbell men he is living by later in Surry Co, NC.
