Will,
It's sad to say but the man that you got the French connection from HAS falsified records--for one, the Matthew Midgett Bible record. This gentleman is deceased now but I was given all his research to catalogue for a library last year and there is proof positive that theMatthew Midgett Bible never existed, at least as we Midgett researchers all thought. I have never been to France to do any kind of research so I can not say whether the Midgett's originated in France or not but since I've seen several things falsified in this mans research it makes me terribly suspect of believing anything that he did unless accompanied by some authentic documentation and so far NO documentation of French ancestry has come across my desk. Earlier research from this man said Matthew was married to a Judith Payne, the daughter of a pirate, which fit her into his own Payne lineage.Years went by and someone found the 1703 will of Samuel White in Maryland which distinctly named his daughter, "Judith, wife of Mathew Miggit", not a Judith Payne. It's sad to believe that some folks, at any cost, will change and falsify things to fit their needs. So all that said, I haven't answered your question about the French connection. The earliest documentation that I have in my own personal research of Matthew [listed as Matthew Midiate in this document] is that he was in Anne Arundel Co., MD in January 1703 when a Wm. Killburne was apprenticed to him to learn to be a ship's carpenter. I have nothing prior to that.
