I hadn't heard the story of Scots not being welcome in the US/Colonies after the Revolution, but I do know that there was a period of time in the late 1700s that the English (Scottish) Government put a halt on Scots leaving Scotland as they were losing too many and needed the labor. (I would have to go back and research the actual dates, but it was after the first of the Highland Clearances.)

Have you had much success going back any further with the Mickles in Scotland?
