It is not necessarily that eveyone spells there name differently ( 100 years ago, only 4 out of 10 could read or write) I have a g-g-g=g grandfather whose birth and early census is a Michael. Later deed and transactions are certified by his "mark" but listed under both Michael and Mickle. His grave marker has him as Mickle. Seems as if census enumerators were not always the best educated either. Some census spellings are atrocious !
