Michael. Armagh, Ireland 1860's to SA
Posted by: Heidi Hodgson Date: October 28, 2000 at 05:20:29
  of 1586

I am searching for the family of Mabel Ethel Michael baptised in Kimberly South Africa in 1887. Her parents moved to South Africa from Armargh during the diamond boom in the Randt. Her mother died of pneumonia some years after Mabel was sent back to England in 1899 at the outbreak of the Boer War. Young Mabel returned to Kent to live with her maternal aunt Martha Woolan (Martha Woolan married to Frank Woolan of Sherwood Park, Royal Tunbridge Wells) Her father had abandoned his family some years earlier in SA. He was reputed to have been a member of the original Cecil Rhodes expediation into what became Rhodesia. He was a game hunter, he reputedly lost an arm being mauled by a big cat. Martha Michaels Uncle Frank Woolan made his fortune in South Africa before returning to Kent, England.

Martha Michael's genealogy is reputedly back to the Hadden family in Armargh dating from about 1680. Any Michaels in Armargh at this time (middle to late 1800's), any family history of emigrations to South Africa, any connections to the Hadden line would be much appreciated.
