Eli W. Michael and wife Nancy Frazier separated in the trail to Oregon in 1847. Eli took the older children and continued. Nancy went back with the two younger children, Martha, born 6 April 1842 and Melissa, born 30 June 1844, apparently with James, a brother of Eli. They may have married and settled in Graves Co. KY. Many of us in Oregon have wondered about the fate of Melissa
I have obtained the widow's pension application papers for her.
Melissa married first John R. Kennedy who died 1872.
She married second 7 Sept 1879 near Dongola, Union Co IL Andrew G. Fager of near Dongola, Union Co., IL. Andrew had been married to Rose Ann who died about 1879. They apparently had at least Charles Obba Fager, born 12 Nov 1878 and who, in 1892, was the ward of J. M. Kehres of Northumberland PA. Andrew was in the Civil War, private then corporal, enlisted 28 Aug 1861 in Co C, 105 Pa vol., discharged Annapolis MD 6 June 1865. He was missing in action 27 Oct 1864 Boydson Plank Road or Hatchers Run near Petersburgh VA. Reportedly captured and sent to Salisbury NC and paroled March 1865. In Feb 1865, he reportedly fell over a fence and caused a rupture on the left side. His occupation had been as a carpenter. Apparently his original claim for a pension was denied but additional papers were submitted April 1882. He died as a result of the hernia 22 Aug 1884 in Union Co IL.
In Oct 1888, their surviving children were Joseph Wesley Fager, born 17 June 1880 and George Washington Fager, born 22 Feb 1883.
Melissa was in Puxico, Stoddard Co MO by 31 March 1885 and still there with son Joseph in 1900. She apparently had 7 children of which only one was still alive in 1900. She died about March 1901.
