The obituary for Nina (Elwell) Parish reads: “Decatur-Former Decatur resident Nina E. Parish, 103, died Monday, April 23, at Martin Luther Memorial Home in South Have, where she was a resident. Mrs. Parish was born Feb. 23, 1887, in Lacota, the daughter of Bert and Jane (Reames) Elwell. Her husband, Ruben, preceded her in death, as well as a daughter, Doris Ulam, who died in 1988. Mrs. Parish lived in Decatur most of her life and was a midwife for several years. She was a member of the Victory Missionary Baptist Church in Decatur. Survivors include a son, Leonard Elwell of South Bend, Ind.; a daughter, Dorothy Hess of Paw Paw; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Services are Thursday at 11 a.m. at Newell Funeral Home and will be conducted by Pastor Marvin Owen. Burial will be in Harrison Cemetery in Decatur. Friends may call two hours prior to the time of the service.”
