Van Buren Co., Mich was not settled until March 26, 1829 when Dolphin Morris, (my 3x great grandfather settled on Little Praire Ronde) which is now Decatur Twnship. He was the first white settler in the county. If your family was in the area earlier, it's possible they were in Cass Co. as Dolphin came to Mich. from Ross Co. Ohio in Nov. 1828 and stayed with brother-in-law James Gardner in Cass Co. while the weather was bad before he settled his family.

My mother grew up in Decatur and I am well aquainted with the town and have lots of cousins in the area. The Decatur Library has a very good genealogy section. Also, I have a copy of both volumes of "A Scrapbook History of Decatur, Mich. & Vicinity 1829-1976" by Catherine Howland. It has tons of stuff, if I come across any Hinckley I'll post it. Check out the Mich. genweb site, if your family had an original land grant, it will be on the land grant list and check out DiBean's Marriage List for each Co. you can reach the list by link. Good luck!!
