I was unable to find them in the 1870 census, despite hand searching the pages for Mendon. They appear again in 1880 in Mendon:

I can't find Napolean in the 1880 census either.
I have been trying to find a family in Lockport, St. Joseph, MI in 1870 and even though I am sure they were there they just don't appear in the census.
