Garrison Family

I am trying to find information on the John Garrison family.
John was born about 1832. I'm not sure what state, it could be Michigan, New York or PA.
His wife was Melinda Stamp.
Their son was Adelbert, born about 1869. I think he was born in the St Joseph area but cannot prove it. Does anyone know where to find birth records of this era?
Adelbert would be my Great-Great Grandfather.
I have been trying to find John's family for many, many years and have had no luck.
Thanks for any information or help. Also any point in the right direction on where to find records would be of help.
Jean
oh.....
I found a John Garrison on the 1850 census of St. Joseph county but he was not with a Garrison family he was with the Stannett family. In this same census in St. Joseph there are several Garrison children with other then Garrison Families. Calhoun, Corwin, Merrill, Peck, and Stannett are the families I found Garrison children. I wonder if Johns parents died...but since I dont know their names I'm not sure how to find out.
Thanks all..
