Excerpts of article from "Ferndale of Yesteryear" by Maurice Cole.
There is a Mason family in Royal Oak in the mid 1920's and on;
James A Mason entered the employ of Giles Hodges as Sales Manager, later 1/4 owner, of Hodges Dodges, auto dealership, (there's a picture of him about 1939). The article also lists Charles Mason who joined the company about 1929.
It says that James Mason didn't actually live in the city of Royal Oak, but was very active in the community. After the company disolved, it became a corporation known as Masons, Inc., and still owned buildings by the 1960's.

Also an interesting entry in 1880 census:
John MASON Self M Male W 38 ENG Farmer ENG ENG
Eleanor W. MASON Wife M Female W 35 ENG Keeping House IRE ENG
John MASON Son S Male W 16 ENG At Home ENG ENG
Edmund M. MASON Son S Male W 14 ENG At Home ENG ENG
Frances A. MASON Dau S Female W 12 ENG At Home ENG ENG
Sydnie A. MASON Son S Male W 10 ENG At Home ENG ENG
Herbert A. MASON Son S Male W 4 OH At Home ENG ENG

Although the above John may be too old to be your John in 1930, it's possible that this family is related.
There are only a few Masons in Michigan born in England, and Tuscola is not that far North of Royal Oak.

At Royal Oak Cemetery there are only two Masons:
J.C. Jan. 8, 1833 - Nov. 26, 1919
Elizabeth D. his wife April 21, 1833 - May 16, 1912
You can call Oakview Cemetery, in downtown R.O.; they are very helpful. Another Cemetery near Royal Oak is Roseland Park.
Best wishes,
