Seeking Info on John J. Knox or his family
Posted by: Albert Hester (ID *****2123) Date: August 02, 2003 at 17:38:49

John J. Knox of Clarkston, Oakland County, became assistant commissioner of the Freedmen's Bureau in Athens, GA after the Civil War. We are trying to obtain biographical information on him for a local history project. He was the son of Walter Knox and enlisted in the 5th Michigan Volunteer Inf. in 1861. He was honored by black freedmen who named their first school in Athens, GA for him. His family seems to have lived in Independence and Springfield townships. Any information would be most appreciated. Dr. Al Hester, Athens, GA.
