I am in search of information on Higgins families in and around Midland County. My great grandmother, Florence Viola (Higgins) Smith, daughter of Wales Higgins of Allen Co., Indiana, had relatives in the area. When she and her husband, Clement B. Smith, migrated from Indiana to the Midland area, it was primarily due to these familial relationships on her side.

Clem worked at Dow and is said to have been the first retiree. Clem retired in 1929 and died in 1933 in Midland. Florence died in 1939 there. They are buried in Coleman.

HIGGINSES: James Higgins, financial officer at Dow and collector of steam locomotives - was a cousin of Florence. Some of the Higginses were in the lumber / forestry business.
