William Watterson - Detroit MI

I am trying to find a death record for my 2nd great grandfather, William Watterson. He, his wife Salina, and their 2 young daughters lived in Detroit between 1858 and 1860.

In the 1861 census, Salina Watterson is listed as a widow living on 270 Brush St, Detroit. I do not know when William died.

I have learned there was no civil registration of b/d/m until 1867 in Detroit.

Does anyone know where to locate a death record for that time period? The population of Detroit was 45,000 - so I hopeful somewhere a record was kept. I am running out of options on where to locate a death record. To my knowledge, they were Protestant and not Catholic.

Any help or suggestions is appreciated. Thank you.
