CHASSELL - Kathleen M. "Kathy" Vanhala, 70, a resident of the N. Sturgeon River Road, Chassell, died on Monday, April 2, 2012, at Portage Health.
She was born in Chassell Township Aug. 11, 1941, a daughter of the late Uno and Laimi (Wirtanen) Kohtala and was a graduate of the Chassell High School.
She was united in marriage 26 years ago to John H. Vanhala in Baraga.
Kathy was employed for several years at Suomi College in the mailroom.
She was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Chassell.
She enjoyed doing handiwork and bead-making.
Surviving are her husband, John of Chassell; two sons, Robert "Bobby" Koski of Virginia and Wayne Koski of Minneapolis; two daughters, Tammy (David) Huhta of San Diego, Calif., and Suzannah Kiierhstyn of Hancock; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two step-sons, John Vanhala and Mike (Kristiina) Vanhala of Chassell; one sister, Helen Matson of L'Anse; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides her parents, Kathy was preceded in death by a sister, Isabelle McDermott and a brother, Marvin.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today, April 6, 2012, in the Jukuri-Antila Funeral Home in Hancock with Pastor Melinda Quivik to officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to services today in the funeral home. Spring burial will be in the Chassell Cemetery.
