Hi Carol,

At familysearch.org the death record for Peter for June 6, 1873 says he was widowed ??

There are two entries, one with no image and one with image. Both show him as widowed.

His age is shown as 69 years, 7 months, 7 days which made his birth about 1804.

I looked for this Peter in 1870 census. He is living with son Albert A. and is age 72 so age at death is off.

1870 TOMPKINS, JACKSON, MI
STORMS
Albert A., age 40, farmer, born NY

Elizabeth A., age 30, born England

Alice, age 9, born MI

George, age 1, born MI

Peter, age 72, retired carpenter, born NY

As Philura is not with them I went back to earlier census.

1850 COLUMBIA, JACKSON, MI
STORMS
Peter D., age 54, farmer, born NY

Lucinda, age 41, born NY

Ēlarrissa, age 17, born N Y

Emeline, age 14, born NY

Wenona, age 12, born NY

Leonard, age 8, born NY

John, age 6, born NY

From this it looks like Peter was married to a Lucinda, not Philura. Albert is not with them and I cannot find him in MI or elsewhere.

I took a look at the 1880 census you mentioned with Philura living with her son Joseph. Joseph is age 52, born NY, wife Polly Ann is 45, born NY, children Charles H. 24, born MI, Mary A., age 19, born MI , mother Philura Hughes, age 79, born VT and Clarissa Sandborn age 83 born VT is his Aunt

so, I went back to look for Joseph S. in earlier years to see who his father was.

He is in Hillsdale, MI in 1870 with wife Polly, and children Charles 14, and Mary 9. , but not his mother

I did a check at familysearch.org and there is a marriage there for Joseph Storms and Polly Ann Briggs in 1853 Jackson Co. but no parents names shown

There is also a death for a Clarisa D. Sanborn, Nov. 8, 1880 Jefferson, Hillsdale, MI - shown as born Vermont
she is shown as widowed, no parents names shown

I then went to Seeking Michigan but the death records there start in 1897 so too late for Clarisa

I found a death for a Philena Hughes, died June 17, 1886 Jefferson, Hillsdale so matches with what you hae for Philura. Death shows her born NH

she is shown as married - age not known

There is a Philura Hughes listed in 1850 and 1870 census at ancestry.com

1850 MONTVILLE, MEDINA, OH
HUGHS

John, age 50, farmer, born NY

Philura, age 45, born VT

Hannah, age 22, born NY

Lars, age 17, born OH

Levasha, age 15, born OH

Alanson, age 13, born OH

Ruthene, age 11, born OH

1860 MONTVILLE, MEDINA, OH
HERNS (as indexed)
John, age 61, born NY

Philera, age 67, botn VT (age is hard to read in image bu indexed as 67)

Hannah, age 32,born NY

Alonson, age 23, born OH

1860 MEDINA, MEDINA, OH
SANBORN
Clarrissa, age 62, born VT

Maria, age 20, born VT

1870 MONTVILLE, MEDINA, OH
HUGHES
John, age 71, farmer, born NY

Thalura, age 66, born VT (name in image looks like Thulura)

next door to them are
SANBORN
Clarissa, age 72, keeps house, born VT

HUGHS
Hannah, age 43, school teacher, born NY

so this does seem to fit with 1880 census info - so either Philura was divorced from Peter and then married John Hughes OR Philura was not wife of Peter.

I think this may be Clarissa Sanborn in 1850 as in 1860 she has Maria age 20 with her.

1850 WATERBURY, WASHINGTON, VT
SANBORN
Eli, age 58, laborer, born NH

Clarisa, age 52, born VT

Marion, age 10, born VT

Marcia, age 10, born VT

so either one of the girls could be Maria

*** Joseph Storms is not with his mother in 1850 or1860 as you see but there is a Joseph Storms living in NY, NY in 1850 -born about 1829 so a possible
This fellow is living with the family of Joseph and Deborah Marsh

1850 NEW YORK WARD 10, NEW YORK, NEW YORK
MARSH
Joseph, age 45,surveyor, born nY

Deborah, age 38, born NY

James, age 5, born NY

Unice, age 41, born NY

STORMS
Joseph, age 21, clerk, born NY

If this is your Joseph, I wonder if Joseph and Deborah are relatives of his ?

I have not found him or wife Polly and kids in 1860 - should be in MI as that is where kids were born.

So, from all of this it sure looks like the Philura Hughes, married to John is the same Philura living in 1880 with son Joseph - and Clarissa Sandborn is right there beside her.

I am wondering if possibly Philura and Clarissa could be STORMS by birth - could Joseph be a son born before Philura married?

OK, I just found the marriage for John and Philura - spellings are off but it is right place

this is found at familysearch.org
and the are listed as John Hews and Filura Stormes

married April 1, 1840, Medina, Ohio

there is nothing to say if it is a second marriage for her or not.
there is a second entry showing a marriage date of March 25, 1840
but when I look at the image it is actually an application for the marriage license

again it does not show if this is a second marriage for either of them. Since they married in 1840 then from the f1850 census it would seem that none of the children would be Philura's

I can find nothing that shows Albert to be son of Philura but it is possible - except that it is possible she and Peter could have been divorced and she then married John Hews/Hughes and perhaps Peter married a Lucinda ?

so still a bit confusing. The Tompkins township entry you mentions says the fmaiy came to Michigan in 1837 but Philura was in OH in 1840 getting married to John.

In the heading of your query you mention name Davis - how does that fit in?

Carolyn L
