My maternal (step)grandmother was Marietta Tonkin, she was the dau. of Edwin Tonkin, who was one of the sons of Thomas. Thomas was a Methodist, perhaps of Bible Christian persuasion, though Emma was a Baptist. However, by the 1880's the family was Bible Christian. Son Edwin was very religious and became a lay preacher and a firm adherent of the Bible Christian sect. His wife's father may have been an influence on him as Sarah Williams' father, John, was a Bible Christian immigrant preacher from England. Edwin, being an unlicensed preacher, served a series of small parishes in Ontario and Prince Edward Island, often being paid in kind for his services and doing some farming as well. According to my aunts he was a likable, congenial man and not at all stuffy or pompous. Certainly his two dau. whom I knew were of similar temperament. Emma died in Darlington, Durham Co. in 1892, but Thomas may have died in Prince Edward Co., Ont. in 1897. This latter fact is a bit odd as his son Edwin and his family were living in Sidney in 1901, across the Bay of Quinte from PEC, and I've not discovered any relative in PEC with whom Thomas might have been living. Thomas's other son, Wm. H., ended up in the western U.S. and has descendents there. I have found their tree through Ancestry.com. Jack Notify Administrator about this message?
