My great grandfather, Henry, filed for divorce from my great grandmother, Lena, in St. Joseph Co., MI in 1918, but a final decree was never issued in the case. (I have seen the documents.) Henry, Lena and family were enumerated in the same household for the 1920 TN census. Therefore, I was extremely shocked to discover that Lena married a much younger man in June of 1920 in Calhoun Co., MI! Based on what I know, the union had to have been a bigamous one. What's more, Henry and Lena were back together for the 1930 MI census. How were these things usually handled back then? My research is complicated by the fact that the family traveled back and forth a great deal between Madison Co., TN and St. Joseph Co., MI.
