The easiest way to make the connection would be through the church records. Figure out where James was baptized and get his parents' info from that parish. Work backwards as far as you can. Then go to St. Peter's in Kingston and get Peter's parish. Contact them for info on births, marriages and deaths of all members of the family. Pre-1869, those are the most accurate and available records. The majority of Catholic parishes in Canada during that period would note the parish of baptism in a person's marriage and burial records. They also note the parents of each person which makes it easier to keep things straight.
