Re: tuscola county michigan genealogy
Hi Sam,
Thought I would try to help you out. I am no relation to any of these familes.
In the 1880 census, Wisner Township, Tuscola Co., MI:
-Walter Neal, age 28, born in New York, parents born in England, farmer
-Emma Neal, age 23, born in MI, father born in NY, mother in MI
-Edward Neal, age 5, born in MI
-Alice Neal, age 3, born in MI
-Robert Neal, age 2, born in MI
-Charles Neal, age 1, born in MI
-Martin Jewell, age 18, farm help (laborer)
In the 1900 census, Wisner Twp., Tuscola Co., MI:
-Walter Neal, 47, born Sept. 1852 in NY, married 25 year, farmer
-Emma Neal, 43, born July 1846 in MI, birthed 8 children, 8 living
-Eddie Neal, 25, born Dec. 1874 in MI, farm laborer
-Clarence, 18, born Nov. 1881 in MI
-Fred, age 17, born Oct. 1882 in MI
-John, age 13, born Aug. 1886 in MI
-Minnie, age 10 (unable to read birth month and year)
1910 Census, Akron Twp, Tuscola Co., MI:
(parents and a son and his family in one house)
-Walter Neal, age 57
-Emma Neal, age 54
-Robert Neal, age 33, married 10 years
-Emily Neal, age 25, wife of Robert, born in MI; birthed 4 kids, 3 living
-Leota M., age 7
-Edna, age 5,
-Nellie, age 2
1910 Census, Wisner Twp, Tuscola Co., MI:
-Edward Neal, age 35, married 9 years, farm laborer
-Sarah J. Neal, age 27, birthed 5 children, 4 living
-Pearl H., age 8
-Ione B., age 4
-D??? E., age 2
-Wesley E., age 6 months
(there are multiple Neal families in Tuscola in the 1910 census)
So, I saw that Walter Neal was born in NY about 1852 and at some point moved to MI.I found this in the 1860 Census:
Groveland, Oakland Co., MI
-Robert Neal, age 35, born in England, farm laborer
-Caroline Neal, age 28, born in England
-Elizabeth Neal, age 10, born in England
-Walter Neal, age 7, born in NY
-John Neal, age 5, born in NY
-Temperance Neal, age 3, born in NY
-James Neal, age 2, born in NY
Then I checked the 1880 census:
Akron Twp., Tuscola Co., MI
-Robert Neal, 57, fisherman
-Caroline Neal, 49
-Charles S. Neal, age 19, farm laborer
-Lydia M. Neal, age 11
-Arthur A. Neal, age 8
So, it fits that the Neal family came from England, moved to NY and then to MI, first Oakland and then Tuscola counties.
Back to the 1900 census:
Akron Twp., Tuscola Co., MI
-Robert Neal, age 76, married 1 year, born Feb. 1824, in England, came to US in 1851, farmer, naturalized citizen
-Jane Neal, age 26, born in 1874 in Canada, wife, married 1 year
(So, Robert marries again, to somebody 50 years younger!!That marriage certificate has to be at the Tuscola Co., clerk's office)
------------------------------------------------
1900 Census:
Wisner Twp., Tuscola Co., MI
-Sadie Mor, age 17, born in Mar. 1883 in MI, father born in England, mother in Michigan, servant (in the James Jones family)
Columbia Twp., Tuscola, Co., MI
-Charles Mor, 43, born June 1856, in England, came in 1880 to US, married 9 years, naturalized citizen
-Annetta Mor, age 29, born Aug. 1870, in Canada, came in 1890, naturalized citizen, birthed 3 children, 3 living
-Lorene, son, age 6, born in Nov. 1893, in MI
-Elsie A., daughter, age 3, born Sept. 1896 in MI
-Ester, daughter, age 1, born Aug. 1898 in MI
So, Charles Mor was the father of Sarah Jane, was married a second time to Augusta (Sarah's step-mother) and had 3 children by 1900 (Sarah's half-siblings).
1910 Census:
Ellington Twp., Tuscola Co., MI
-Charles Mor, age 49, married 18 years, farmer
-Annetta, wife, age 35, birthed 4 kids, 4 living
-Lonie, son, age 17
-Elsie, daughter, age 13
-Esther, daughter, age 11
-Shirley, daughter, age 2
1920 Census:
Ellington Twp., Tuscola Co., MI
-Charles Mor, 56 (incorrect I believe), widower, born in England, came in 1880, naturalized in 1886, laborer
-Shirley Mor, daughter, age 12
There are some discrepancies in the ages between the 3 census' but that was not unusual to have happen.
I did find this info:
Charles Mor, married 26 December 1891 in Huron, MI to Annetta R. Stauffer
Maybe if you obtain that marriage certificate, that would give you his first wife's death info.
-----------------------------------------------
1860 Census:
White Rock, Huron Co., MI
-John W. Done (wrong spelling), age 31, born in Canada, farmer
-Mary J. Done, age 27, born in Nova Scotia
-Henry J. Done, age 4, born in MI
-Joseph W. Done, age 2, born in MI
1870 Census:
Columbia Township, Tuscola Co., MI
-John W. Doan, age 43, born in Canada, farmer
-Mary J. Doan, wife, age 35, born in Nova Scotia
-Henry A., son, age 14, born in MI
-Joseph W., son, age 12, born in MI
-Daniel A., son, age 9, born in MI
-Amanda J., daughter, age 6, born in MI
-Harriet M., daughter, age 4, born in MI
-Robert F., son, age 1, born in MI
I'm thinking that is the Harriet Doan you are looking for.
1880 Census:
Sebewaing Twp., Huron Co., MI
-John W. DOAN, head of household, Married, 53, born in Canada, Farmer, parents both born in PA
-Mary Jane DOAN, wife, 45, born in Nova Scotia, parents born in Nova Scotia
-Henry DOAN, son, 24, born in MI, farmer
-Elmer(?)DOAN, daughter-in-law, 23, born in NY, father born in MA, mother born in NY
-William DOAN, son, 22, born in MI
-Daniel DOAN, son, 19, born in MI
-Miria DOAN, daughter, 14, born in MI (I think this is Harriet)
-Charles DOAN, son, 11, born in MI
-Amanda SANGER, Daughter, married, 17, born in MI
-Phillip SANGER, grandson, 2, born in MI, father born in Canada, mother in MI
-Lucinta DOAN, granddaughter, 5, born in MI, father born in MI, mother born in NY
-William DOAN, grandson, 3, born in MI, father born in MI, mother born in NY
-Lilba DOAN, granddaughter, 10months, born in MI, father born in MI, mother born in NY
So, the Doan house was pretty full. Was Harriet's middle name "Miria"?Or it was just spelled wrong: Miria instead of Harriet. Her sister Amanda was already married and has a son but her husband is not mentioned. And one of Harriet's brothers was also married with 3 of his children living with their grandparents.
The Doan family also moved back to Huron County by 1880 from Tuscola. You noticed that Charles Mor married his second wife in Huron County. My guess is that that is where Charles married Harriet and that is where Sarah Jane Mor was born.
In the 1900 census, Daniel A. Doan, brother of Harriet, (assuming that we have the right Harriet), is living in Nester Twp., Roscommon Co., MI. He's married and has 2 children and is a lumberman. It states he was born in December 1862 in MI.His children were: Mabel and Charles J.

I hope this gives you a good start on your search.
