If I am reading your posting correctly, you are trying to get first name of Peter Valstar's father, b. 1924?

After toying around with alternate spellings ( I have found that to be the rule, rather than the exception in my own searches!), I find family I believe is yours on 1930 census- they are indexed as VALSTON:

1930 Census
47 Lander Ave., Royal Oak, Oakland County MI
VALSTAR (Valston), Peter, 34, married 24 MI HOLL HOLL, body builder, motor car co.
Mattie I., 30, married 20 MI GER GER
Beverly J., 8 MI
Peter J., 5 MI

With such uncommon name, do you then assume by ages that the Peter Valstar and family in Kalamazoo are the grandpararents and family? Sounds good to me. Hope this helps.
