Welcome to the wonderful world of genealogy- a hobby, an an obsession, a window to the world, you name it. I'm just an amateur myself and fairly new at this, but I love it! I would suggest as a start that you delve into the Handyside surnames, especially James, Elizabeth, and Bruce on the LDS site. It is free (FamilySearch) and just type in your search names and start looking around. I find at least one tree that goes another generation back for you. Experiment around, have fun and good luck. There's no stopping you now!
