Provement – Now Lake Leelanau -- Event in the year 1920 Can anyone help me with the date that the fire of St. Mary of the Assumption (Catholic School) burned down in 1920? Even knowing the month may help as I am wondering if there were any casualties as I am searching for information on the death of Mary Magdalina Chesney (Sister Julia) a teacher died there on February 29, 1920 . Found the following information on a website. In 1871 the village acquired a post office with the name "Provement." In 1887 St. Mary of the Assumption, a Catholic school, was built. The two-story wooden building burned down in the 1920s, and a brick building was built where the old wooden building used to stand. Saint Mary of Lake Leelanau Catholic Church and School is still in operation today. In 1924 the post office changed its name from Provement to Lake Leelanau. From a newspaper article –follows The Bay City Times Tribune had the following obituary: Mr. and Mrs. Frank Chesney of 914 Tenth street received a telegram Sunday informing them of the death of their daughter, Sister M. Julia at Provement at 6 o'clock Sunday morning, Sister M. Stella of Bay City and Sister M. Cornelia were on their way to their sister's bedside but were unable to reach their destination on account of deep snow, and Mrs. Link and Mrs. Grimes of this city also sisters of the deceased could not reach Provement on account of weather conditions.
