GEORGE W. STETSON
Was born Oct, 25, 1836, in North East township, Erie Co., Pa.; his father, Sanders Stetson, is deceased; his mother, Eliza Lott, is yet living. At the age 27 years he enlisted July 24, 1863, at Burdickville, Leelanaw Co., Mich., as a private in Co. E, 10th Mich, Cav. attached to 23rd A. C., and was afterwards promoted wagon master; his battles include: Strawberry Plains, Chuckey Bend, Carter Station, Bull’s Gap, Greenville, Morristown, and considerably scouting and skirmishing; in the winter of ’63, he was detailed as wagon master and secret police; his elbow joint was dislocated Nov. 3, 1864, between Bull’s Gap and Greenville, and was sick in hospital at Knoxville, Tenn., six weeks; he was captured in the fall of ’64 near Strawberry Plains by Gen. Moseby, and robbed of everything; he was held about thirty-six hours, when he swam the Tennessee river and escaped; wandered two weeks in rebeldom before reaching the union lines; he was discharged Nov. 11, 1865, at Memphis, Tenn., at close of the war. Mr. Stetson was married in Berlin, Ottawa Co., Mich., June 21, 1858, to Elizabeth Howland, born in Colding, N. Y., in Feb., 1835; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Howland, are deceased; they have two children, Maria E. and Williard G. Comrade Stetson, was J. P. of Leelanaw Co., Mich., three years; commissioner of highways, school director fourteen years, and path master; he is a member of John Braden Post, No 488 G. A. R., draws a small pension is a farmer, and his address is North East, Erie Co., Pa.
