My great-grandparents, Joseph C. Cadeaux and Johanna DeHeus, met at Reed's Lake in 1906!! There was a passenger boat that was called the "Hazel A" that toured the lake at that time. They married in 1907 and named one of their daughters Hazel which we now understand commemorates their meeting.
Joseph was the son of a french-canadian lumberjack who went to Muskegon at the height of the lumber days. Joseph himself was a cabinet maker and came to Grand Rapids to work. One of the companies he worked for was Berkey & Gay. Johanna was the daughter of dutch immigrants who arrived here in 1883 and settled on Grandville Avenue but then her family moved to the neighborhood near Wealthy and Eastern and they frequented Reed's Lake in the summer months.
