Rites Set for Former Augusta Police Chief
Funeral services will be held 1p.m. Wednesday for Lawrence J. (Buck) VanOver, a veteran area police officer and onetime police chief in Augusta.
VanOver, 56, died Sunday at his home in Schoocraft at 414 Hayward. Services will be held at the Truesdale-Robertson Chapel in Schoolcraft with burial in Schoolcraft Cemetery.
VanOver served as a police officer for St. Joseph County, the City of Portage, the City of Sturgis and was appointed Augusta's chief in late 1964.
The World War II veteral had been employed by Simpson Lee Paper Co. in Vicksburg.
Survivors include his wife, Gertrude; five sons, Dennis and Robert of Kalamazoo, and Paul, Keith and Ronald, all of Schoolcraft; three grandchildren; a brother, Paul of Milwaukee; two sisters, Mrs. Lawrence (Marion) Speece of Schoolcraft and Mrs. Owen (Katheryn) Wagner of Mendon; and several neices and nephews. A son, Thomas, preceded him in death."
