Joseph Schoonover is my 3rd Great Grandfather. Joseph Schoonover was born March 14, 1791, place unknown. He raised a family of nine with wife, Elizabeth, DOB January 1, 1794, nee and place unknown. Children were Locy, 12 Dec 1818; Cornelius, 24 Jan 1820; Joseph Henry, 12 Jan 1822; Rebecca L., 3 Oct 1823; George L., 6 Aug 1825; Mary H., 1828; Margaret, 27 Nov 1830; John W., 9 Aug 1833; and Susan Jane, 17 Nov 1835. The following facts have been compiled:
1830 Census in Stillwater, Sussex County, NJ shows Head of House (HOH) as Joseph with five children. Joseph and his wife are age 30-40. Two girls, one under 5, one under 10. Three boys, one under 5, one under 10, and one under 15. Only HOH is named on 1830 census but children's ages correspond with Schoonover Family Bible (SFB) documentation. 1840 NJ Census does not show this man which could indicate that he moved on to Comstock, Michigan as our Schoonover records show. (Note: There are 2 Joseph Schoonover's listed in the 1830 Census. This is NOT Joseph Montayne Schoonover!)

It appears that the entire family of Joseph Schoonover moved from Sussex County, NJ to Brady Township, Kalamazoo County, Michigan between 1835-1837. Elizabeth, Margaret, John W., Joseph Henry, Susan Jane and possibly George have all been located there, and Locy was nearby in Niles, Michigan all verified by census and other records.

1837 Michigan State Census for Kalamazoo County places Joseph in Comstock, MI. Also the 1840 U.S. Census for Michigan records Joseph Schoonover in Comstock, MI.

Susan Jane Schoonover married Samuel Kimber on 24 Oct 1858. She is listed as Jane on the marriage records and as Susan on the 1860 & 1870 census. Elisabeth, her mother, died at their home in Vicksburg, MI on 15 May 1875.

I would be glad to share family files with other persons believing they are related.
