DNA is not needed here; I do know my earliest Commens/Cummins ancestor and discovered, in my early years of research many many years ago, that he is not connected to any of the known Cummings families in Massachusetts. In fact, my family is from NY.

The William Cummings I asked about is one I do not know about but since he has not shown up in my years of research on this family I have to assume he is of another real Cummings family and not of my Cummins family. But I was of course curious since I do have a William Cummins as ancestor and knew the one in my query was not him!

I do agree that the "G" was incorrectly added to the surname all too often by outsiders who assumed a name had to be spelled such a way or that whoever wrote it another way was perhaps illiterate; some of the branches of my family have used/do use the Cummings spelling; but after seeing documents written by my people, I went back to (and use for them) the original spellings they used; to each his own and to what they know. (Or know not).

As for DNA tests : one can hardly not know about them these days unless one lives in a cave but even if I knew of a male who would qualify (which I do not) I would not dare to ask someone to spend their hard earned cash on something like this during these hard times. If they are curious they can do it on their own, if they can afford to do so.
