Hello to all,

Who are the parents of this Elisha Godfrey (I believe they descended from the family of Richard & Mary (Newcomb) Godfrey, by way of one of their 3 sons, Thomas, Richard or Newcomb--Elisha Godfrey another son & brother of these men, married Hannah Reynolds, so I have ruled him out, she moved to Kent County, MI & I have their history).

Here is more inf. on the 13 children of Elisha Godfrey & Polly Barden of NY, Ohio & MI:

First a story from a Leslie, Ingham County booklet:

Elisha Godfrey came to Leslie in 1836, bringing his family with him. When he reached the Grand River he found a bridge made of logs which would sink into the water if stepped upon. The father was unwilling to venture with his family in the wagon over this primitive crossing. His little girl, Betsey, who was a cripple, heroically placed her crutches upon a log, pressed it down until it rested stationary, then swung herself upon the log and tried the next in the same manner until she reached the farther shore. This incident shows the inherent bravery, independence and determination which have made the life of Betsey Godfrey Shaw a success and blessing, regardless of environment. Her life history shows the struggles of a child of a pioneer. Her father was not strong and she was thrown upon her own resources early in life. Her school privileges were few. When about fifteen years old she had earned and saved enough money to pay for eight yards of calico at twenty-five cents a yard to make herself a new dress. A little later she added two light calico aprons and a cape to her wardrobe. These capes were made to cross in front and were considered quite dressy, but she had no shoes. Fortunately, an aunt brought herself a new pair and gave the old ones to the girl. These she had nicely mended and though they were two sizes too large she wore them to school all winter and began teaching in the spring. From that time on she was self-supporting.

I don't know much about Elisha before he came to Leslie, MI in 1836, though several of his children are in the census after that with their own families.
____________________________________________________________

Richard Godfrey & Mary (Newcomb) Godfrey had 4 sons: Richard who married an Elizabeth Brownhill, Thomas m. "Mariam", Elisha who married Hannah Reynolds (Hannah Reynolds Godfrey lived in Kent, Co.), & Newcomb who married a Lucinda.

Note that Wm. Godfrey above, son of Elisha & Polly (Barden) Godfrey named a son "Norton", my Polly (Godfrey) & Daniel Tainter had a son Norton, who was born in 1845 & died in Jackson Co., MI in 1848, 2 years after his father.

It seems in the 1870 MI census online that there is a Henry Jaycox married to a "Clarissa" with a son James & a daughter, Henrietta. It should be Sophia Godfrey, most likely an error, as there is a Clarissa Godfrey, also, but she married a Theron Faught (?).

IF Richard Godfrey & Mary Newcomb are the grandparents of Elisha Godfrey, of Leslie, Ingham Co., MI through their son Thomas, Richard or Newcomb he is descended from Wm. Brewster of the MAYFLOWER & Stephen HOPKINS of the Mayflower.

It is likely the brothers named sons after their brother Elisha, Richard & Thomas, etc.

Also, I believe that the Jaycox children's parents are John & Sara Jaycox of NY.

Searching for descendants of this Godfrey family & willing to share inf.

Sincerely,
Marilyn LeVeque
