Could use some help here if anyone might know the answer.....

1st please note that the surname Stakem is found spelt over 40 ways

I have traced a Martin STAKEM from the time he was br in Athy Co Kildare Ireland to his emigration to New York with his parents and siblings in Dec of 1854....

I found that his father Matthew Stakem was listed in the Boston Pilot by his mother Julia Stakem

18 August 1855

Of Matthew Steachem, of Athy, Kildare Co., who arrived at New York in December last, Accompanied by his wife, Julia, and 6 children. In said month he left for Cincinnati, Ohio, leaving four of his children in Staten Island Hospital, and his wife and one child in Albany. Since then nothing hes {sic} been heard from him; but it has been ascertained he never reached his destination, hence the worst fears are entertained for his safety. He was 57 years of age, with dark red hair. Information received by his wife, care of the Agent of the Commissions of Emigration, Albany, N. Y. Volume III: 1864-1856

The 'children' would be
Martin, Denis, Lucy, Margaret, Bridget, Elizabeth and Matthew.

His mothers maiden name is Bermingham....

Then I lost the family in the 1860 census.... poof the faries got them all it seems..... have looked everywhere for them...

Its like both parents died and the children split up ...could be that the 4 children in hospital died there for all I can find out

I found a Martin in the following census that going by age and place of birth should be the one I am looking for....

1860 census Forester, Sanilac, Michigan

1870 census appears as Martin Steakham living in Michigan Huron Sand Beach in a boarding house? or owner of Lumber yard working in a saw mill age 38

1880 Martin Staken 49 Michigan Iosco Oscoda District 148
disabled somehow in this census

No 1890 census

1900 census shows no record of Martin .....
Since the 1880 census shows Martin living in Iosco I am assuming that he died there.....

I also found that Martin Stakem bought land in Michigan

Source Information: Michigan Land Records [database online]. Orem, Utah:

Since he was not in the 1900 census I figured he had died and found the following but am not sure if it is him or not....

Our Lady of Lake Huron Cemetery Harbor Beach, MI

Names taken from the booklet that was compiled
by Robert B. LaBelle Port Austin, MI

STAKEM MARK        ----        ----        M

there is no birth yr or death yr for this man... I am wondering if his name is not also messed up and when the stone was recorded the recorder thought this was the name or else Martin went by Mark instead of Martin?

I don't know...I lost this family royal and have managed to find 2 sons I think but have no paper proof they are one and the same as the ones from Athy.

Martin Stakem was baptized 19 Oct 1834

My question is how can I find out more info on this Mark Stakem who lies in his grave in Our Lady of Lake Huron Cemetery Harbor Beach, MI ?

What happen to the land he bought? How can I found out that question?

Thanks for any help anyone might give me.
