Roger,
Thank you for directing me to this site. It is a new one to me and I'll be spending some time there.

This info on Walter is puzzling. It has to be the correct person - all facts match. However, I found in the 1890 Special Veterans Census "Surviving Soldiers, Sailors, and Marines, and Widows, etc", Fanny is listed as Fannie VanAllen, widow of Walter L. Funk. Warren VanAllen (Fannie's second spouse)is listed just previous to this and a note indicating 'Dup' (duplicate) is made. I can't explain this. I've often seen divorced women noted as widows in early census, but why it would be so on this census is confusing. Walter and Fanny had 2 sons - both took the VanAllen name of their stepfather.
