Ideas on best way to find death info on Oliver Smith, died early to mid 1950's

I have a great uncle named Oliver P. Smith (aka, Bud), who was in Cheboygan at the time of his death. He was married to a second wife (marriage more than likely took place in MI between 1948 and early 1950's).

For now, I am focusing on when Oliver died.

From what I know, Oliver was born in Sangamon County, IL in 1898, moved to Detroit with his family sometime arround 1920 (though was not living at with the family), married a woman named Harriet who dies in 1947-48, remarried not too long after (no one recalls her name) and two years he is dead (sometime between the death of his first wife and his death he moved to Cheboygan). I also know Oliver owned a used furniture store.

Any ideas on how to research this? Living relatives are really fuzzy on the years.

(On a side note, why is it that MI deaths are indexed from 1867-1897 and 1971-1996? Where is 1898 to 1970?)
