It could be to simply get to a larger town. All of the towns in Cass Co., MI are very small. Many are only about 15-20 min. drive to reach the state line, and only 10 more min. to get to a much larger town-- South Bend, IN. I know in the 30's it would have taken longer of course. I have never heard any legal benefit for getting married in IN.
