where to research?

I am planning a trip to Berrien Co. to do some family research. My family jumped back and forth between Berrien Co. and St. Joseph Co., Indiana. Was wondering if anyone had any advice on where the best place to do research for those counties would be? I would appreciate any advice, thanks!!
