According to the "Berrien Bicentennial 1776-1976", page 215 "The area organized as Royalton Township in 1835 included various lands which were later detached as Lincoln, Sodus, and a part of St. Joseph Townships. Finally, Royalton assumed its present boundaries in 1868, with the St. Joseph River meandering down its east perimeter."

Hope this helps you.
Cindy
