I am studying the Benjamin Dibble family from Middleville Michigan. In the
1880 census, an Emma Humphrey appears as the daughter of Ben Dibble living in the household. The problem is Emma Humphrey was born about 1861 in Vermont and her Mother was listed as being born in Vermont. Sarah Dibble was born in New York.
I looked at death records from Barry County Michigan and found a Thomas J.
Humphrey, date of death Feb. 12, 1875. Thomas died in Johnstown from what the death certificate lists as esgsifelus at age 69. Thomas was born in
Vermont and was a farmer. (record#1479, ledger page 41, date of record Jun
5, 1876) The last name of his Father was not recorded.
Emma would have been about 14 when Thomas Humphrey died. Does anyone know if Emma was adopted by the Dibbles?
Emma also appears in Marshall MN. A newspaper article states that Emma was not allowed into Ben's son's home in Marshall, and was forced to stay with the probate attorney. Ben Dibble's wife Sarah moved into her son's home in Marshall after her husband's death. After the probate, Emma disappears.
